Whoa, Whoa, Whoa…running naked? What kind of blog is this? Naked races do exist but you won’t see me lining up for one anytime soon. I mean no sports bra? Ouch! And I can’t even begin to imagine how much the free flopping on a man would hurt. So when I’m talking naked running let me clarify that I mean running without a GPS watch, tracking device or music. It’s running completely free at your own pace, for whatever distance you like without any distractions.
In the past, I would never run without a GPS watch. Even if I was heading out for a non-training run. I wore that watch like a safety net. I needed to finish my run at exactly a full mile, not 0.1 over or under. And I needed to know my pace regardless if it was supposed to be an easy run or not.
While travelling, I don’t have my Garmin watch with me and I don’t want to use up my data using GPS tracking apps on my phone. Plus, because I am not training for anything it really doesn’t matter what distance I accomplish or what speed I run at. Right now I’m running solely for me. I am running because it feels good. I am running because my mental health suffers when I don’t. I am running to explore new destinations and cities. It’s freeing to leave behind the tracking and run at whatever pace and distance I feel like. If I feel like running fast, I do. If I feel like stopping to take picture, I do. And if I’m tired and want to walk, I do. I love racing and training but the constant tracking and trying to best yourself can lead to burnout. It’s nice to have the opportunity to get back to running simply for the love of it, no other agenda.
In addition to leaving my watch behind, I’ve also been running without any music or podcasts. I often say that running is my therapy. I love how the mind can wander and I often come up with some of the best ideas when I’m out on the road. But sometimes I distract my mind by using podcasts and music. It’s great to be able to put on music and pump yourself up when you’re hitting the struggle bus during a hard run or to listen to a podcast and have a 3-hour run just fly by. But I also find with those distractions I have less time to let my mind wander.
So once again I’m taking a different approach right now while travelling. I’m leaving my headphones behind. I do this partially for safety as I’m running in new areas and need to be alert but mostly because I am enjoying the experience of being distraction free. I get to look around and marvel at the scenery and places that I’m running. I get to get lost in my thoughts. I get to be alone for just a little while which when you’re spending 24/7 with your spouse, can be a nice treat.
So will I be running without headphones and GPS watch forever? No. I fully intend to get back to training when I’m done my year of travel but this has been a great experience in reminding myself what I love about running and that even during training cycles I should take some time to run completely naked.
Do you run without GPS watch? Can you run long-distance without any music or podcasts?
