So I’m just over 2 weeks into my year long travel year and I thought I’d touch base on how I’m managing fitness while on the road. At home, I worked out 5-6 days a week and some days I did double workouts. We all know that when travelling, it’s much more difficult to workout. There are 1 billion posts about how to stay active on vacation but the truth is, it’s hard. You want to spend your time relaxing. Or you’re so busy sightseeing you barely have time to fit in a workout. Or you don’t have time for the whole shower/get ready thing after a workout, as a girl the struggle is real!
When I go on vacation I workout if it fits naturally into my day and if I feel like it but if I don’t get to it, I don’t worry about it. But I’m not on vacation, travelling is just my life now. Travel can be stressful at times and fitness is the best way I manage my stress so going without working out is not going to work for me.
But am I working out 5-6 days a week? Nope. Tom and I decided our goal would be at least 3 days a week. While we got in a few workouts, we haven’t hit our goal. There are plenty of reasons why. The biggest one being that I came down with a pretty nasty cold that needed a few days of rest. We’ve also been doing some pretty fast travel that has us getting up and moving onto our next destination each morning. We could technically get up at 5 a.m. to workout before we leave but we have chose not to.
Even though I’m working out way less than normal, I’m absolutely not stressed about it. Our travel style is very active. We walk a TON every single day. We seek out hikes. We bike around the city (and we bike even faster when we get caught in the pouring rain). We take the stairs instead of the escalators.
The fact is, I’m no longer living a sedentary lifestyle and fitting in a workout at the end of the day for an hour. Instead, I’m active the majority of my day. It’s definitely an adjustment in mindset but I’m really enjoying the shift in lifestyle.
As for the types of workouts, I’m no longer at the gym or barre studio, which means I’m hitting the pavement running. I’m also trying to get in some body weight workouts. Tom and I have been planning our own HIIT body weight workouts which allow us to get workouts done quickly. We use apps like Card Workout and Tabata Timer.
Do you find you’re more active when you travel? Do you workout on vacation? Do you use any apps to workout?
