January was a great month for me workout wise. I’ve never been so consistent with a workout schedule and when I reflected and thought about what caused the change, I realized it all came back to one thing, accountability.
This year, I hired a running coach. And although I’m only a month into my training plan, this is by far the most consistent I’ve been with a running plan. I love looking at my running log and seeing what I’ve accomplished.
I know if I decided to skip my run to go sit on my couch and watch Netflix, I’d have to tell my coach and I do not want to do that. Just knowing that gets me to the gym or outside running on days when I really don’t want to.
Talking with my coach last night, she has been very impressed with my consistency and thinks if I continue doing what I’m doing, I can shave some serious time off my marathon.
I am also doing the Live Fit Trainer program at the same time as my sister-in-law. Even though we live in different cities and don’t workout together, we keep each other accountable by texting each other and checking on progress. I like knowing that we’re in it together and just a simple check in keeps me on track to continue.
Lastly, my blog keeps me accountable. I enjoy sharing my workouts and keeping a weekly workout recap. If I skip a workout, I have to admit it to the internet. That definitely keeps me more accountable.
Now, you may not have a blog, a running coach or a group of friends who like to workout but that doesn’t mean you can’t find ways to hold yourself accountable. Track your workouts in a calendar so you can see your progress. Have a friend who texts you to ask if you did you workout. Sign up for a workout class, if you’ve paid money and are expected, you’re much more likely to show up.
I really do think accountability is the key to exercise consistency. If no one but you knows that you skipped a workout, it’s very easy to do. So find your accountability and get after it!
What do you use to hold you accountable to workout?
