Happy 2016 everyone! I had a busy weekend so I’m going to get right into recapping it.
New Years Eve (Thursday)
Tom and I were hosting a New Years Eve party, so after work, I picked up a few last minute things then headed home to begin my prep work and get myself prettied up. 😉
We decided on the party pretty last minute so I wasn’t sure we would end up with a very good turnout. But everyone else left their New Years plans until the last minute too so we had about 20 people show up. There was tons of food and an entire bar on our deck. That’s the one great thing about winter parties, you don’t need a fridge.
The party was a blast and we rang in the new year in style.
New Years Day (Friday)
Usually, when I host a party I’ll do a lot of the clean up the night of to save myself from the mess in the morning. But this time, I wasn’t exactly in the proper shape to clean up. So instead, I got to wake up to a house that looked like a tornado went through it, which was super fun. After cleaning the house, I literally did nothing all day. Tom, some friends and I laid on the couch and watched an entire season of The Office.
Afterwards, Tom and I planned to head out for the afternoon to go snowshoeing in Kananaskis. We stopped by the rental place on our way out of town and were told they were out of snowshoes. We called around to other rental places and they were none to be found!
We knew we wanted to do something outdoors since it was a beautiful day so we decided to go skating instead.
Then we hit up a boutique coffee shop downtown called Cafe Blanca. We tried siphoned coffee for the first time. It’s quite an intricate process. It looks like you’re in a chemistry lab when they make it. The staff were great at explaining every single step and letting us watching it get made.
The coffee was fantastic. Normally, Tom and I use milk & sugar in our coffee but this was so good, we drank it black.
At home, I made some homemade Jambalaya, then we decided to start a new Netflix show, How to Get Away with Murder. I highly recommend it! It’s so addicting. I’m sure it won’t take too long to burn through the only season on Netflix.
I started my day with a spin/barre combo class at Fit Republic. I really love these combo classes. With all the types of workouts I want to squeeze into one week I often can’t make it to both a full spin and full barre class, so this is perfect.
I came home and showered up quickly to look presentable for my Nexus interview. After all my travel in the last year, Tom and I finally decided to sign up for Nexus which will allow us quicker entry/exit to the U.S. It really wasn’t a difficult process and I wish we had done it much sooner.
We went for a quick Starbucks date together before meeting up with friends for an Escape room. Which, if you haven’t heard of, is a game where you get locked into a room and have to figure out a series of puzzles and clues to get out.
I first tried this out in Queenstown and absolutely loved it, so I have been wanting to try another one. This one was tough! We finished in about 58 minutes. Technically this room only gives you 45 minutes to finish, so we didn’t fully succeed but the guy let us finish up. The challenges were really fun and unique.
Afterwards, a few of us went to a rock climbing gym. I used to rock climb with Tom fairly regularly, but I struggled with my fear of heights. No matter how often I went, I would end up hanging onto the wall halfway up begging Tom to let me down. So, it’s been about two years since I’ve been back.
This time, we only went bouldering so I didn’t have to go too high and I refused to go to the top of the bouldering wall anyways. I really love how great of a workout rock climbing is. I will definitely be going back again.
Tom and I finished up our busy day by going out for some Vietnamese then headed home to watch some How to Get Away with Murder before bed.
