Protein in the diet is important and especially for active people. I know for myself, getting enough protein daily can be a challenge. When Tom is away for work I generally eat vegetarian. Now it’s not because I dislike meat or for health reasons, it’s purely out of
convenience laziness. Even though cooking up a chicken breast isn’t a monumentous task, some days it feels like one and choosing eggs or cottage cheese as my suppertime protein source is much more convenient.
Vegetarians can meet their protein needs through diet but it does take a little more consideration everyday which is one thing I have been noticing. Enter hemp hearts!
Never heard of them? Hemp hearts are the center of the hemp seed which is left after a hemp seed is shelled and hulled. They are tiny little things. They have a slightly nutty flavour if you eat a bunch of them but when used in recipes they are basically tasteless.
So you might be wondering, if they don’t taste like much, why do I bother eating them? Because their nutrition profile is pretty great. For 30g (about 3 Tbsp) you get 10g protein. Plus 2g Omega 3’s, and 2.5g fibre. For an active individual or someone like me struggling to meet their daily protein requirements, a boost of 10g protein is very beneficial.
Plus, because they don’t have a strong taste these little guys can be used in practically anything. I add them to my morning smoothie, sprinkle them on salads, add them to casseroles and incorporate them into my granola. Their uses really are endless, if you check out Manitoba Harvest Hemp Hearts website there is a huge directory of healthy recipes you can use Hemp Hearts in.
Full disclosure, I did receive a bag of Manitoba Harvest Hemp Hearts for free for review through my affiliation with Sweat Pink. However, I have already been using this product in my diet for quite some time. I love the product and signed up for the campaign because I like to share products with my readers that I genuinely enjoy.
Now here’s the great part. If you haven’t tried these before, you can win your own bag of them. And if you already love them, you can still win!
